The CARLO Design team at our Berlin studio
A studio in Berlin since 2015

The team that shapes Berlin homes.

CARLO Design was founded in Berlin in 2015. The city has been our home and our largest body of work, over forty private homes across Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Charlottenburg, Wilmersdorf, Friedrichshain and beyond.

Architect Charlotte Wiessner founded CARLO Design in 2015. Our Berlin studio is led by Andrea Tomasena, with architects and designers on the ground in Mitte. We work with carpenters, stuccateurs, parquet specialists and trades whose names we know personally, relationships that take years to build and cannot be replaced by a directory.

What we do in Berlin

Three services, one signature.

We design private homes from first sketch to final furnishing, architecture, interiors and the construction phase that brings them together.

i.

Architecture

New builds, extensions and full reconstructions of Altbau and Gründerzeit properties. We handle Bauantrag, HOAI Leistungsphasen 1 through 9, and coordinate with engineers and Bauamt.

ii.

Interior Design

Spatial layouts, custom joinery, lighting and furnishing, preserving original stucco, parquet and tile stoves where they exist, and integrating modern requirements without compromise.

iii.

Construction Management

On-site coordination, scheduling, quality control and budget tracking. We work according to HOAI Leistungsphase 8 with trades we have built relationships with over a decade.

Why CARLO Design in Berlin

Six reasons clients
choose us.

Berlin has no shortage of design studios. Here is what makes our way of working different, and why most of our new projects come through client referrals.

  • i.

    One team, end to end

Architecture, interiors and construction managed by the same studio. No handoffs, no lost intent, no coordination gaps between trades.

  • ii.

    Altbau is our specialty

Most of our Berlin work is Gründerzeit, Wilhelminian and Altbau. We know how to preserve original stucco, parquet and tile stoves while integrating modern systems invisibly.

  • iii.

    HOAI Leistungsphasen 1–9

We hold our own permit signature in Berlin. Bauantrag, statics coordination, energy certification, all handled in-house from concept to final acceptance.

  • iv.

    Trade network in the city

Carpenters in Wedding, stuccateurs in Pankow, parquet specialists in Lichtenberg, electricians who pick up on weekends. Personal relationships, not lowest bidders.

  • v.

Eleven Best of Houzz Design awards

Recognised consecutively from 2017 through 2026. Featured in AD, Bauwelt, Bundesstiftung Baukultur and Cube Magazine. Substance over noise.

  • vi.

    Reachable directly

Andrea or Charlotte are reachable directly. No account managers, no project hand-offs to junior staff once the contract is signed.

FAQ

Common questions.

We work across all of Berlin, from Charlottenburg and Wilmersdorf in the west to Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte in the centre, to Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg. Our studio is in Mitte, but distance is not a factor for us.
Yes. We handle the full Bauantrag process, from feasibility through Bauamt submission to final acceptance. We work according to HOAI Leistungsphasen 1 through 9, with our own permit signature for Berlin projects.
Most of our private home projects in Berlin range from €1,500 to €3,000 per square metre depending on the level of finish, the state of the existing structure, and the materials selected. Altbau renovations typically run higher than new builds. We provide a binding cost frame after the initial concept phase, before you commit to anything.
Yes. The majority of our Berlin projects are Altbau, Gründerzeit apartments, Wilhelminian penthouses and historic townhouses. We know how to work with original stucco, herringbone parquet and tile stoves, and how to integrate modern requirements into period architecture without flattening it.
We can do either. Many clients ask us to handle the full scope including furniture sourcing, custom joinery, lighting and final styling. The home is finished when you walk in, not when the builders leave.
A full Altbau renovation in Berlin typically takes 6 to 12 months from first sketch to handover, including design and the Bauantrag. The construction phase alone starts at 4 to 6 months and can run longer. Listed buildings (Denkmalschutz) can run longer due to additional approvals. We give you a realistic timeline before you commit.
At CARLO Design both disciplines work in one team. Architecture covers the floor plan, structure, building permit and the handling of the existing fabric; interior design covers materials, light, built-ins and furnishing. For you that means one point of contact and one design in which both sides are thought through together from the start. Whether your project leans more towards one or the other is something we clarify in the first conversation.
There is no fixed lower limit. What matters is whether a project needs proper planning: a single Altbau apartment with kitchen and bathroom qualifies just as much as an entire house or a commercial space. For very small jobs, such as a single room, we will tell you honestly whether our involvement is worth it for you.
Let's talk

Your home in Berlin deserves this.

"Tell us about your property, your timeline, what you are hoping for. We will come to you, listen, and present a concept and a realistic cost estimate, before you commit to anything."

We come to you · One project slot remaining for autumn 2026
