Light as a source of energy and beauty
the underlying principle of Iranian architecture.
Starting point
An archetypal Berlin Altbau apartment in a historic building, the secondary home of a young, entrepreneurial couple of Iranian origin.
Turning point
The ancient Persian predilection for light as a source of energy and beauty became the load-bearing principle. The entry leads directly to the centre of the home, a capacious area with an open kitchen and an unattached counter, accessible from every side.
"The ancient Persian predilection for light as a source of energy and beauty is one of the defining elements of Iranian architecture, and this ethos articulates the underlying principle of this interior."
Result
The lustrous marble floor and the brilliant working surfaces reflect the incoming light and visually expand the space. An oval bathtub with golden insect figurines, an art-deco shower with herringbone tile, a yellow armchair against unbleached curtains. Every room a different angle on the same source of warmth.
