Holiday home interiors on Mallorca,
with durable materials and storage for guests.

A holiday home or rental villa on Mallorca has to take more than a family home: changing guests, sun, salt air and hard water. From Palma, CARLO Design plans materials, furniture, storage and equipment so the house still looks good after many seasons. We coordinate delivery and installation on the island, and you do not need to travel for it. We work all over Mallorca, in English, German or Spanish.

Furnishing for guests

Your guests do not know the house.

Whoever stays in a holiday home is there for the first time. Guests look for the light switch, drop wet towels, carry sand inside and chairs out to the terrace. The furnishing has to allow for that. Surfaces should cope with stains and covers should be washable. Storage belongs where suitcases and beach things actually end up, and anyone should be able to work the lights without instructions.

Even so, the house should not look like a rental. We use the same materials as in our homes on the island: lime plaster, natural stone, oiled wood, linen and wool. They tend to look better with use. Most of our Mallorca clients live abroad, so furnishing from a distance is our normal way of working.

What a holiday home needs

Three things that count in the first season.

After the first few weeks with guests you can tell whether a house was furnished for everyday use or just for a photo.

i.

Durable, low-maintenance materials

Solid wood that can be re-oiled in places instead of foil-wrapped fronts whose edges lift. Stone or tiled floors that cope with sand and wet feet. In the bathroom few joints and a water softener, because the water on Mallorca is hard, and metals that can handle the salt air.

Bathrooms for hard water
ii.

Storage and guest essentials

Room for suitcases in every bedroom, hooks and shelves by the entrance and the terrace, a lockable cupboard for things that are yours alone. We plan bed linen, towels and textiles for full occupancy and record everything in the schedule of items, so every piece can be bought again.

Bespoke built-in storage
iii.

Furnishing from abroad

You decide room by room on screen or at meetings in Palma or Berlin, and we send you the samples. We coordinate shipping, storage and installation on Mallorca. You do not need to travel for the deliveries.

How the remote model works
How we furnish a holiday home

From an empty house
to the first guest.

We work back from the day the house should be lived in or let. Bespoke pieces and made-to-order upholstery need the longest lead time.

  • i.

    Project Check

Floor plans, photos and your target date. We clarify how many guests the house should sleep, what stays and what budget you have in mind for the furnishing.

  • ii.

    Occupancy and layouts

Who sleeps where, how many sit at the table, where does the luggage go? That gives us furniture layouts on the floor plan and a list of equipment.

  • iii.

    Materials and sampling

We show materials that can take use and send samples. If you travel once, travel for this: fabrics and woods look different in the island light than on a screen.

  • iv.

    Bespoke pieces and orders

Built-in wardrobes, benches and beds made by joiners we have worked with for years, plus the orders with manufacturers. Every item has its status in the schedule.

  • v.

    Delivery and installation

We group the deliveries, install on site and check every piece as it is unpacked. We claim for any transport damage.

  • vi.

    Styling and handover

At the end the beds are made, the lamps wired and the accessories in place. You receive the schedule of items with manufacturers and dimensions, so worn pieces can be replaced exactly later on.

Arabic Loft.

The Arabic Loft is a loft in a historic townhouse in Palma and not itself a holiday home. We recommend its materials for houses with guests too: limewashed walls, marès stone, hand-glazed ceramics, oiled wood and linen. They get more beautiful over time.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

A holiday home is used by many people who do not know it, and it often stands for weeks without you. So what counts is surfaces that forgive use, storage for luggage and beach things, a lockable area for your own belongings and equipment that is enough for full occupancy. Even so, it should feel like a home and not like a hotel room.
Dense stones and tiles on floors and in splash zones, oiled solid woods that can be touched up in places, linen and wool for textiles. Less suitable are foil-wrapped fronts and high-gloss polished surfaces that show every scratch. More in Materials that age beautifully.
Yes. We agree concept and selection digitally or at meetings in Palma or Berlin, and coordinate delivery, storage and installation on the island. Two visits make sense: one for sampling in the house and one for the handover.
Right after styling, when the beds are made and every piece is in place. We plan the furnishing so it also works in pictures: clear sightlines, daylight, and a few well-chosen pieces in preference to lots of accessories.
No. Tourist rental requires its own licence, and that is something you as the owner arrange with your advisers. We furnish the house.
